Shift to distance learning extended through Jan. 28

Dear Robbinsdale Area Schools families,

I want to start this message with a thank you for your support and understanding during this period of distance learning. 

We are once again asking for your support as we extend this period of distance learning at all district schools through Friday, Jan. 28. In-person learning is scheduled to begin again on Monday, Jan. 31. Families will receive additional information later today from their schools.

We had hoped this most recent period of distance learning would have a sufficient impact on the numbers of staff and students who are ill. However, transmission rates across the seven district communities remain high, and we continue to experience a significant number of absences among staff and students in our schools. With so many staff absences, we can’t reasonably provide adequate in-person learning or services for our students. 

What will next week look like?

Distance learning will essentially be the same as it has been this week for most students. There’s no school on Monday, Jan. 24. Beginning Tuesday, elementary, middle and high school students will follow their regular daily schedule as outlined by their schools last week, conducting their learning remotely using their district-provided devices. 

Students who receive special education services in a center-based setting will return to in-person learning services starting on Tuesday, Jan. 25. Please look for additional communication from the student services department.

Meals

Meal bundles will be available for enrolled students Tuesday, Jan. 25 through Friday, Jan. 28 at eight district locations. Learn more about these meal bundles, including day and evening pickup times, as well as locations. Students accessing support in our buildings will be provided with breakfast and lunch.

Student Support Centers

One major change will be the opening of Student Support Centers for some students beginning Tuesday, Jan. 25. Each school will communicate individually with families that might be eligible for additional support. Transportation and meals will be provided.

Transportation

Bus transportation for the Student Support Centers will run using the normal routes in the morning, starting Tuesday, Jan. 25. Students in the support centers will be released two hours early and transported home by school bus. Please continue to check the Durham bus app. If there are any cancellations, we will communicate those changes by email and robocalls as we have this school year. 

Athletics and activities

While our classrooms will remain in distance learning, like this week, high school athletics and activities will continue as scheduled. However, all middle school athletics will remain canceled during this time.

High school students will be responsible for getting to school for practice and games, but activity buses will run during this time for return trips home. We will continue to monitor COVID numbers among our players and coaches, and make adjustments as needed. 

Community Education

Students and families who participate in Adventure Club, Early Adventures, The Basement, The Source and adult academics will receive information on how programming will look during this extension of distance learning.
